Update: Haddon Heights boys basketball tops Haddon Twp., advances to semifinals

The Haddon Heights boys basketball team knocked off Haddon Township for the second time this year Thursday night, earning themselves a matchup with top-seeded Paulsboro in the South Jersey Group 1 tournament.

The Garnets were led by Brandon Joyner and Lucian Brownlee, who combined for 35 points in the 59-48 victory, according to Philly.com.

The semifinal game is set for Saturday.

The Haddon Heights girls team didn’t fare as well Thursday night, falling 67-41 to second-seeded Gloucester City.

The quarterfinal round of the South Jersey Group 1 basketball tournament is tonight with both the Haddon Heights boys and girls teams facing tough games.

The seventh-seeded girls will play first at 6 p.m. at second-seeded Gloucester City. The girls finished the season 15-10 and won their first-round game Tuesday, 57-50 over Audubon. Their opponent, Gloucester City, finished with a 22-3 record and managed a 65-22 victory Tuesday over Riverside.

basketballNJ.com listed Heights’ Nadja Riggs among its “others to watch” list for the tournament.

At 8 p.m., the fifth-seeded boys team (15-12) will play at fourth-seeded Haddon Township (16-8).  Heights advanced to the game with a 65-53 victory over Glassboro, while Haddon Township advanced with a high-scoring 105-77 win over Clayton.

The game is a rematch of the Jan. 10 face-off, which the Garnets won, 56-44, led by 18 points from Nick Smith.
