Pay wall getting closer to ‘South Jersey’s newspaper’

Earlier this year, the Gannett Corp. — which owns the Courier-Post along with about 80 other daily newspaper around the nation — announced it would begin a “new subscription model” that included a pay wall at all sites.

Shortly after that, nearby Gannett property the News-Journal in Delaware started its pay wall. And now it’s coming to New Jersey, as the editor of the Asbury Park Press explains.

Several paragraphs in, the piece explains: “Beginning in May, nonsubscribers will have limited access to articles on before being asked to subscribe. Current and new subscribers will have enhanced and unlimited access to our content 24 hours a day on all platforms.”

Readers seem … unimpressed. Among the comments:

  • Pay???? For This????? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
  • Will we get discounts for every error we find in their headlines and stores?
  • I’m sorry. You are not the New York Times. I pay for on-line access to the New York Times. I will not pay for on-line access to the Asbury Park Press. The quality is just not there.

There has been no official announcement regarding the Courier-Post joining this round of pay walls. The model was to be in place at all sites by the end of the year.
