Dangerous storm could hit region next week

Hurricane Sandy, currently moving toward Jamaica and Cuba, could result in damaging winds and significant rainfall and flooding early next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Image shows one of the worst-case scenarios that could happen if the storm tracks into South Jersey. This is only one potential forecast.

How severe the storms in South Jersey are — and which areas are hit hardest — can’t be predicted at this time as the storm may take any of a number of routes as it moves north.

“However, the likelihood of the storm affecting our region has increased over the past 24 hours,” according to the weather service report.

The storm may bring multiple threats including:

  • Strong damaging wind gusts
  • Extremely heavy rainfall
  • Major flooding along streams and rivers
  • Major coastal flooding (full moon occurs Oct. 29)

The storm is expected to be slow moving, which also will result in longer periods of rain and a greater risk of flooding.
