Barrington schools cancel closings; will be open Nov. 8, 9

Avon and Woodland schools will both be open Nov. 8 and 9. The schools originally were scheduled to be closed on those dates to allow educators to attend the annual New Jersey Education Association convention.

After Hurricane Sandy tore through the shore area, however, the NJEA canceled its convention in Atlantic City for the first time in 158 years.

The state’s Department of Education then left it up to individual school districts to decide whether to open on those dates to allow children to make up the time they had lost to Sandy-related closings.

The Barrington School District — which originally announced the days off this week would be made up during Spring Break — has now announced it will instead be open for full days with transportation, breakfast and lunch on Nov. 8 and 9, thereby allowing for a full week of Spring Break in May.

As of 12:30 p.m. Friday, Haddon Heights School District is still listing Nov. 8 and 9 as “closed” for the district. This report will be updated if that changes.

Text of update from the Barrington School District

Due to the cancellation of the NJEA Convention, the Barrington School District will be OPEN on Thursday, November 8 and Friday, November 9.  These will be full days for both students and staff.  Transportation, breakfast and lunch will be provided as normal.
