N.J. Uniform Crime Report shows 6 violent crimes in Barrington in 2011; twice as many as previous year

Violent crime doubled in Barrington in 2011 vs. 2010, according to the New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime report, while nonviolent crime dropped from 87 reports in 2010 to 64 in 2011.

Police-car-lightsThe violent crimes reported in Barrington in 2011 were one rape, two robberies and three aggravated assaults. In 2010, the borough had no reported rape cases, two robberies and one aggravated assault.

The new numbers resulted in the violent crime rate per 1,000 residents rising from 0.4 in 2010 to 0.9 in 2011, while the overall crime rate per 1,000 residents dropped from 12.9 in 2010 to 10.0 in 2011.

The nonviolent crimes reported in 2011 were 24 burglaries, 38 larcenies and two motor vehicle thefts, down from 27 burglaries, 52 larcenies and 8 motor vehicle thefts in 2010.

Most neighboring communities saw violent crime fall from 2010 to 2011, with Lawnside and Magnolia seeing the sharpest decreases. Overall crime rates increased in three neighboring communities, decreased in two and remained the same in one.

In neighboring communities (below), one murder occurred in 2010 and one in 2011 (both in Lawnside); and two cases of rape were reported in 2010 followed by eight cases reported in 2011.

  • Barrington: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents rose from 0.4 in 2010 to 0.9 in 2011. Overall crime rate fell from 12.9 to 10.0.
  • Bellmawr: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents rose from 1.7 in 2010 to 2.1 in 2011. Overall crime rate remained at 29.0. (Two rape cases reported in 2011.)
  • Haddonfield: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents fell from 0.9 in 2010 to 0.8 in 2011. Overall crime rate fell from 27.4 to 19.8. (One rape case reported in 2011.)
  • Haddon Heights: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents fell from 0.8 in 2010 to 0.7 in 2011. Overall crime rate remained fell from 21.4 to 21.3. (Two rape cases reported in 2011.)
  • Lawnside: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents fell from 7.8 in 2010 to 5.1 in 2011. Overall crime rate increased from 30.6 to 36.0. (One murder and one rape case reported in 2011.)
  • Magnolia: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents fell from 6.0 in 2010 to 2.8 in 2011. Overall crime rate increased from 31.1 to 33.4.
  • Runnemede: Violent crime rate per 1,000 residents fell from 3.0 in 2010 to 2.8 in 2011. Overall crime rate increased from 42.0 to 49.6. (One rape case reported in 2011.)
