Buddhist monks to create, destroy work of art at Haddonfield Friends Meeting House

Members of the public are invited to visit and watch as monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India meticulously work over several days using colored sand to create a work of art — then destroy the work as “a metaphor of the impermanence of life.”

Sand MandalaThe demonstration will take place June 25 to 30 at the Haddonfield Friends Meeting House, 45 Friends Ave., where visitors are welcome to observe and take part in the project.

Schedule:

  • June 25 – 7 to 8:30 p.m.: Opening Ceremony
  • June 26: -10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Construction of Sand Mandala
  • June 27 – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Construction of Sand Mandala
  • June 27 –  7 to 8:30 p.m.: Prayers, Music and Chanting
  • June 28 – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Construction of Sand Mandala
  • June 29 – 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Construction of Sand Mandala
  • June 29 – 7 to 8:30 p.m.: Prayers, Music and Chanting
  • June 30 – 11:15 a.m.: (Immediately following Meeting for Worship) Closing Ceremony and Demolition of Mandala
