An annual compilation of the “most corrupt” members of Congress from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington lists two members of New Jersey’s delegation, including U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, who resides in Haddon Heights and represents Barrington and most of Camden County in the House of Representatives.
This is the second consecutive year for Andrews, while U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez was placed on the list of 13 names for the first time.
According to the watchdog organization’s write-up on Andrews:
“Donors to Rep. Rob Andrews’ campaigns likely have no idea that the congressman is treating his campaign account like a personal piggy bank.
“The Garden State Democrat got caught spending campaign funds on perks like a family trip to Scotland, travel to Tinseltown with his daughter, and even a high school graduation party.
“Rep. Andrews has also earmarked more than $1.5 million for Rutgers University School of Law, his wife’s employer.”
The House Committee on Ethics is investigating the allegations after the Office of Congressional Ethics said there was “substantial reason to believe” Andrews broke the law, according to an NJ.com report. Andrews has said his campaign spending was proper.
His chief of staff, Fran Tagmire, called CREW “hypocrites” in the NJ.com report.
“CREW is a Washington, DC, interest group that takes money from secret donors to finance false and malicious attacks on people, and then refuses to disclose where its money comes from,” Tagmire said. “It is telling that CREW refuses to hold itself to the same standards of public disclosure as the people it attacks. Congressman Andrews is working hard every day to serve the people of South Jersey.”
